Cylinder Heads
In an internal combustion engine, the cylinder head (often informally abbreviated to just head or heads) sits above the cylinders on top of the cylinder block or block. It closes in the top of the cylinder, forming the combustion chamber. This joint is sealed by a head gasket. In most automotive and marine engines, the head gasket also provides space for the passages that feed air and fuel to the cylinder, and vents that allow the exhaust to escape. The head can also be a place to mount the valves, spark plugs, and fuel injectors.
At Thunderbolt Engines & Transmissions, our specialists are extremely familiar with a large variety of foreign and domestic cylinder heads, head gaskets and cylinder blocks. These components form the most important portion of any engine, and we have the knowledge and experience to install or repair them all. From Ford, Chevy, Cadillac, Infiniti, Nissan, Lexus, Volkswagen and many more.

Dual Overhead Cams DOHC
Allows optimum positioning of the valves for a crossflow cylinder head.
Double camshafts are used to allow direct actuation of well-placed valves, without rockers.
Widespread in modern car design
Overhead Valves OHV
Still used in many larger V8 pushrod engines. Needs pushrods and rockers to actuate valves. Major improvement to the flathead engine.
Single Overhead Camshaft SOHC
is a design in which one camshaft is placed within the cylinder head. In an inline engine, this means there is one camshaft in the head, whilst in an engine with more than one cylinder head, such as a V engine or a horizontally-opposed engine there are two camshafts: one per cylinder bank.
